  • Krispy Kreme Conversion?

    Krispy Kreme Conversion?

Dunkin’ Donuts and I have a long sordid history. When I lived in Atlanta, I couldn’t get good bagels (except for Bagel Palace but even those weren’t so good.) I’d leave my apartment and crave a place to sit and eat a bagel. The closest place, unfortunately, was Dunkin’ Donuts. At first I thought those…

  • Raise a Glass to Summer (and in that glass put a Root Beer Float!)

Here’s a classic summer drink that requires two ingredients. Both are readily available at your supermarket or even your drug store: (1) Vanilla Ice Cream; (2) Root Beer. To assemble: scoop a scoop of vanilla ice cream into a large glass; pour root beer on top. Raise your glass and drink! Happy summer!

  • Your Favorite Recipe

I get lots of e-mail from people who are eager to share recipes. I am grateful for this but I sometimes wonder: “Why should I be the lucky one with all this information? Why doesn’t everyone share with everyone else?” And so I am posting this post RIGHT now for you to share your favorite…

Sunday is for Brunching: Sunday Brunch with Seth & Amy at 9th Street Market

One nice thing about my web site is that it brings people back into my life who fell out of orbit. Seth and Amy are high school friends who knew me before I was the glorious specimen you see above you now in a red sweater holding a pot. Amy and I e-mailed a bit…

  • How To Open A Bottle of Wine When You Don’t Have A Corkscrew

How To Open A Bottle of Wine When You Don’t Have A Corkscrew

Wine is trickling its way into my foodie consciousness: after dinner with Clotilde where the Babbo waiter paired some dishes with wine, I’m really starting to understand how wine enhances the overall dining experience. I like this Hemingway quote posted today on Gothamist Food: “In Europe we thought of wine as something as healthy and…

  • Your Good Humor Personality

    Your Good Humor Personality

I have a memory. I am in my room in Oceanside, NY–I’m about 9 or 10 or maybe even 11. I remember the Beaches soundtrack playing on my low-grade tape player (or was it Dirty Dancing?) (and people wonder if homosexuality is genetic?); I remember my Apple IIgs sitting on my glossy beige desk; and…

  • Jitters, Critters, Where’d You Get Those Fritters?

Jitters, Critters, Where’d You Get Those Fritters?

Stella left a few ears of corn behind after the party was over (see previous post). I spied it in the fridge last night after coming back from the Big Apple BBQ Party (see next post) and decided to go ahead and make corn fritters. I used a recipe from the Gourmet cookbook. As you…

Pretty Pretty Cupcake, Why Do You Taste So Bland? (Cupcakes at The Cupcake Cafe)

You must hate me, reading public. I’ve been backlogged since Tuesday: four days of posts I haven’t shared with you. Well not TOO much has happened. Tuesday I spent the day with Kirk of The Daily Kirk and we had a true New York day. Started in the Village–ate brunch at Shopsin’s. This time I…

  • “The Most Important Artistic Collaboration Since Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men”

Check out Danny’s take on our meal at the Bar Room at The Modern. His review is actually really smart, in-depth and funny. If that doesn’t appeal to you, you can read mine again!

  • Celebrity Comments

A few days ago, on my non-food-related sidebar “On The Side” I wrote a review of the new documentary “The White Diamond” by Werner Herzog. I wrote the review hastily (but not necessarily thoughtlessly) and that was that. Imagine my surprise, then, this morning when I read a comment from the subject of the film…
